What does a Speech-Language Pathologist do?
Speech-Language Pathologists assess, diagnose and provide intervention in the following areas:
Articulation Delay and Disorders (sound production)
Language Delay and Disorders (RECEPTIVE-understanding and EXPRESSIVE- verbal expression)
Dyspraxia (a motor planning difficulty of speech)
Language-based Learning and Literacy Difficulties (Oral and Written Language; Reading and Spelling Difficulties)
Autism Spectrum Disorders and Pervasive Developmental Disorders– augmentative and alternative communication systems, such as, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), use of technology (eg iPad), Makaton Key Word Signing and Social Skills
Social Skills Development/Pragmatics – play, conversational skills, non-verbal and verbal communication
Stuttering (Preschool and school aged ; Lidcombe Program)
Swallowing and Feeding Management for infants/toddlers, and children with congenital abnormalities (e.g. Down’s Syndrome) or craniofacial abnormalities (e.g. cleft palate)
Adolescent Language Difficulties – organisational and study skills, exam technique and essay writing
Developmental Disability
School Readiness Programmes and Groups

Southern Sydney Speech, Language and Learning Clinic offer a number of service delivery options to suit carers and educators including:
Individual assessment and therapy- at two Mortdale sites and various school settings
Preschool screening assessments - on site assessment to ensure early detection and intervention for speech, language and learning difficulties
School Readiness Programmes/Groups- developing language skills and pre-literacy skills
Social Skills Groups

Information Presentations and Workshops for Staff Training and Parents
Consultative Services to parents, carers, teachers and other professionals
PRESCHOOL and SCHOOL BASED SCREENINGS, ASSESSMENTS and INFORMATION PRESENTATIONS
Southern Sydney Speech, Language and Learning Clinic offers the opportunity for school and preschool based screenings and assessments for the convenience of parents, and for a collaborative approach to therapy with educators and carers. Free Staff and Parent Workshops are also available to discuss the identification of speech and language delay/disorder and facilitation of speech and language development.
